Supporting Role was called in by a client whose fast growing company had offices in Britain and New York, as well as a home-office. When we took over their system they had 20 members of staff, and although the Internet played a large role in their business they had no internal firewall which meant their computers were unprotected from malicious hackers.
The firewall solution we implemented allowed us to install network to network VPNs (Virtual Private Network). In effect, this creates a 'tunnel' between locations over the Internet, and the two ends can communicate with each other as if they were on the same local network. It is not just the offices that are linked however, staff can remotely access the system through their laptops.
At the point of writing the company has doubled in size and the MD's holiday home in the Mediterranean is awaiting broadand so that it can also be linked with the two offices. Once this has been done we will install a Voice Over IP solution which allows internal extensions and external lines at all locations to behave as one system.
The MD will be able to conduct business from her home-office, London, New York, or even the Med, her clients will believe she's in the office, only the background noise and accents will give them a clue as to her real location!
