We run a number of Windows and Linux email servers for our clients. Running your own email server gives you a lot of control over the configuration and use. The “one size fits all” approach of Microsoft’s Office 365 and Google’s Gmail do not always work, and when they have problems there is absolutely nothing you can do about resolving the problems except wait.

There are systems that use email that have nothing to do with individual users using individual user accounts. For example the ticketing systems that most technical support departments use are not based on receiving email in a program like Outlook.

You may need a hybrid solution, a cross between a normal email system and something like a ticketing system, or you may need to create email addresses on the fly for campaigns and projects, and then archive the responses when that bit of work is finished.
